Letters: Religious tradition forbids dehumanizing other human beings

Jews and Christians of all denominations clearly know that our present U.S. immigration policies contravene our shared moral values and basic human decency. Jewish and Christian leaders in the U.S. have expressed concern that the current immigration policies violate their shared moral values and basic human decency. Their religious traditions demand that love for God is demonstrated by love for our neighbor, demonstrated by Deuteronomy 6:4-9, Leviticus 19:17-18, Matthew 22:34-40, 1 John 4:20-21, among other Scriptures. This includes respectful, compassionate and humane treatment of our sisters and brothers regardless of gender, creed, color, ethnicity or nationality. Some may choose to ignore this call from Jesus for heroic generosity and welcome to the other. Matthew teaches that abusing the other is abusing God.
