BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD)- The aftermath of a major hurricane can be devastating for those in its path, but a local doctor says pre-planning can alleviate some of the stress that comes with the aftermath of severe weather.
Dr. Clayton Runfalo with Ochsner Heath said to start with the small but important things like having a first aid kit ready.
“Now is the time you want to prepare and get ready,” Runfalo said. “One of the simple things everyone should do is have a first aid kit at home. Some simple supplies with bandages, some gloves, antiseptics like alcohol wipes, and peroxide. Maybe some triple antibiotic ointment or Neosporin. Just so you have some things ready in case somebody gets a cut or a scrape.”
Runfalo said food is medicine. While stocking on food Runfalo mentions this is also a good time to be up to date with medications with at least a two-week supply. If you need a prescription refilled during an extended outage, Runfalo said to know the available resources.
“State law does allow, under certain emergencies, pharmacies to dispense a two-week emergency supply,” Runfalo said.
It’s important to make sure your medical devices can still operate if there is a power outage.
Runfalo also adds how important it is to check in with our mental health ahead of a hurricane.
“Mental health is so important when there is a storm coming through before, during and after. It’s an incredibly stressful time. Everybody’s tension rises quickly. We don’t talk enough about mental health in this country and this state. So it’s up to us to be prepared,” Runfalo said.
