Letters: In hurricane season, be careful what you wish for on illegal immigration

Letters: Those whose homes have been destroyed by storms know that workers from south of the border have been vital in rebuilding. The border crisis has been well covered by both right-wing and left-wing media outlets, with both parties making hay over the issue. The Democrats have pushed for a bipartisan border security bill and the state Legislature has passed a bill to make illegal immigration a state crime, pending a Supreme Court ruling on a similar Texas bill. The author suggests that illegal immigrants entering the country are not necessarily coming to commit violent crime, as statistics show that they commit crimes at a lower rate than we do.

Have you heard about the border crisis? It’s hard to miss, with both right-wing and left-wing media organizations making hay with it, especially on slow news days. The Democrats forced Senate Republicans to go on record against the bipartisan border security bill (Donald Trump told them to vote no). Our state Legislature passed a bill to make illegal immigration a state crime (which will await a Supreme Court ruling on a similar Texas bill to go into effect). And, of course, we have some Louisiana National Guard troops in Texas for politician photo-ops.

So why are these folks entering our country? Muling fentanyl? Nah, Mexican cartels smuggle in wholesale quantities, and China uses international mail. Are they coming here to commit violent crime? Nah, they could probably do that with less effort in their home countries and stats show that illegal immigrants commit crimes at a lower rate than we do.
