Baton Rouge Fire Destroys Home After Blight Inspection
A Baton Rouge man lost everything hours after inspectors checked his blighted yard. Now he has no clothes and nowhere to live. A backyard fire in Baton Rouge's Monticello neighborhood destroyed Douglas Crawford's home, leaving him homeless and his property in ruins. The fire, which was ruled accidental, occurred just hours after the city had inspected the blighted yard. Crawford, who lives alone, said the items piled around his property were used to make home repairs and earn money. The house had accumulated appliances, tools, and other debris for over a decade. An after-action report found that hoarding conditions on the property complicated firefighting efforts. Firefighters brought in an excavator to demolish what remained of the structure and extinguish hotspots buried in the wreckage. An order to clear the property remains in place but has not yet been scheduled.
