West Feliciana Parish Schools in Louisiana have preemptively announced a closure for Tuesday, January 16, 2024, due to the forecast of severe icy weather conditions. The decision comes as an effort to ensure the safety of students and employees by mitigating potential hazards on icy roads. Consequently, all classes, including virtual coursework, and extracurricular activities scheduled for the day have been canceled.

Superintendent of Schools, Hollis Milton, released a statement on Monday morning, indicating that the decision was taken with the primary aim of ensuring safety. The school district, in a proactive measure, aimed to steer clear of potential risks associated with icy road conditions. As of now, the closure only affects the school day on Tuesday, with the decision for Wednesday to be made later.

As of Monday morning, other schools in the Baton Rouge area have not announced closures. However, with several parishes in the area under advisories for extreme cold and wintry weather, there may be additional announcements to come. Governor Jeff Landry has issued a state of emergency, hinting at the severity of the anticipated weather conditions.

The Louisiana Trust for Historic Preservation also released a list of the most at-risk endangered sites in Louisiana, including the oldest Black cemetery in Baton Rouge, Sweet Olive Cemetery. The site, maintained by the nonprofit Friends of the Sweet Olive Cemetery, houses about 5,500 burials. Other endangered sites include Barker’s Pharmacy in Plaquemine, the Beauregard Town Historic District in Baton Rouge, the original site for the Greater New Guide Baptist Church, and Julius Freyhan High School in St. Francisville. The Freyhan Foundation is actively endeavoring to restore the high school into a cultural and civic center for the parish.
