LSU women's basketball vs. Michigan: Score prediction, scouting report in March Madness

LSU women's basketball and Michigan bring different styles of play to their March Madness second-round matchup. Here's our scouting report. LSU women's basketball coach Kim Mulkey and Michigan coach Kim Barnes Arico will face off in the Round of 32 of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday night (6:30 p.m. ET) in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge, marking the third time the two coaches have met in the past five postseasons. Mulkey is leading the team with 29-2, while Arico and Mulkey have a different brand of basketball than Arico, but their styles have been much different this season. LSU will have to contend with the Wolverine's length and size, while Michigan's back line is a handful physically, but all three bring something different with their varied styles of play. Tigers guards Alexis Morris, Jasmine Carson, and Flau'ae Johnson will play the most important defensive roles for their team, while LSU has the speed advantage at every spot on the floor with Phelia likely guarding Morris.

BATON ROUGE – When it comes to tournament competition, Kim Mulkey may not know an opposing coach better than Michigan's Kim Barnes Arico.

At Baylor, Mulkey faced off with Arico and her Wolverines twice in the NCAA Tourament, a 80-58 win in the second round in 2018 and a 78-75 overtime win in a Sweet Sixteen thriller in the bubble in San Antonio in 2021.

Now, Mulkey will guide LSU women's basketball (29-2) against Michigan (23-9) in the Round of 32 inside the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on Sunday night (6:30 p.m., ESPN), marking the third time the two coaches have met in the past five postseasons.

Arico brings a different brand of basketball to the matchup this season, but the two coaches' styles, historically, haven't been that far apart.

The Wolverines have size at all positions with this year's squad while Mulkey, in her second season in Baton Rouge, is still sculpting LSU into her image and right now, have a few more smaller guards on her roster.

LSU will have to contend with the Wolverine's length and size.

Maddie Nolan comes in at 5-foot-11, sophomore Laila Phelia at 6-0 and senior Leigha Brown at 6-1. But not only is Michigan's back line a handful physically, but all three bring something different with their varied styles of play. The trio combined for 43 points in Michigan's first-round win over UNLV.

Tigers guards Alexis Morris (5-6), Jasmine Carson (5-8) and freshman Flau'jae Johnson (5-11) will play the most important defensive roles for their team.

Even inside with sophomore star Angel Reese, who on Friday became the first Southeastern Conference player in 100 years to post a 30-point, 15-rebound game in the NCAA Tournament, and senior forward LaDazhia Williams, LSU has the speed advantage at every spot on the floor.

Phelia will likely guard Morris, and she's just four games back from a knee injury. Carson and Johnson are also quick driving the ball downhill while Reese can bring the ball up the court.

LSU 63, Michigan 58: The Tigers will have problems with the Wolverines' size early, but Mulkey and her team will figure things out to gain control in the fourth quarter to get to the Sweet Sixteen
