This week in BR: Food Truck Round-up, Pop Up Market, Juneteenth Celebrations

Wednesday, June 12 This week in Baton Rouge, we feature several events including a Food Truck Round-up, Pop Up Market, and Juneteenth Celebrations. Dr. Michael Mamp, Director and Curator of the LSU Textile and Costume Museum, will host a free gallery talk about the history of Louisiana designer Geoffrey Beene at the Shaw Center on Thursday. Alternative rock band Silversun Pickups will perform at Chealsea’s Live on their 2024 tour of their latest album, Physical Thrills. DIY Disco is inviting Game of Thrones fans to test their knowledge on the series and participate in a friendly competition. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on 1747 Main St., the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is hosting a pop up shop extravaganza in support of small businesses. All ages are welcome to celebrate Juneteenth with free live music and food on Friday at Gus Young Park.

Since you don’t have enough candles at home, head over to the Bougie Bar on Wednesday to make some more. Spend a relaxing midweek evening sipping wine and creating custom candles with your friends at Wax N Wine Wednesdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event costs $40 plus taxes.

Dr. Michael Mamp, Director and Curator of the LSU Textile and Costume Museum, will host a free gallery talk that delves into the history of Louisiana designer Geoffrey Beene. from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the fifth floor of the Shaw Center on Thursday. The exhibit on Geoffrey Beene will remain at the museum until June 23, 2024.

Alternative rock band, Silversun Pickups, are stopping by Chealsea’s Live on their 2024 tour of their newest album Physical Thrills. This Los Angeles based band has over 1 million monthly listeners on spotify. Wow! That's pretty big to be coming to Baton Rouge... If you like bands like Metric, Modest Mouse and Death Cab for Cutie, it’s worth checking them out. Tickets for the show cost $42.50 ahead of time and $45 on the day of the show. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. Purchase your tickets here.

DIY Disco is calling all Game of Thrones fans to come and test their knowledge on the series and indulge in some friendly competition. Competitors and walk-ins are also welcome to join in their Happy Hour from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m..

Head over to Perkins Rowe to enjoy a variety of different food truck vendors and live music from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday. A few of the food trucks participating are Capitol Seafood, Louisiana Lemonade, Ninja Snowballs and Elisa’s Cuban Coffee & Kitchen. This event is free and open to the public, and you can check out a full list of the food truck lineup here.

Come sip and shop with Time Warp Boutique at The Radio Bar in support of Baton Rouge Pride. Bird Event Group will be there playing some “fun toons” and the event is from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m..

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on 1747 Main St. the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Nu Gamma Omega Chapter will host a pop up shop extravaganza in support of small businesses. The market will include food vendors, local boutiques, shoes, accessories, clothing, health care and many more booths to interest all ages and demographics. The market is part of the Sorority’s Build Our Economic Wealth Initiative, and the proceeds will support their youth scholarships.

All ages are welcome to celebrate Juneteenth with free live music and food on Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Gus Young Park, a BREC facility. For more information about the event, reach out to State Rep. C. Denise Marcelle at (225) 359-9362, who is the host of the event.

Karen Waldrup, a contestant on The Voice in 2024, is coming to the Shaw Center to tour her 2023 album Kendall Country Road. Waldrup was named 2023 Top 5 Artist to Watch by Country Evolution, so you should all come out and watch her! The show starts at 7:30 p.m., and tickets are $24 plus fees and can be purchased here.

The Chortazo Gallery is offering a chance to celebrate freedom and express themselves through art at an afternoon painting party from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Open to all ages, the event costs $15 and does not require any previous art or painting experience.
