Faimon Roberts: Investigation’s findings should prompt change to LA's Justice of the Peace system
In some parts of Louisiana, these part-time elected officials have found a way to make their cases extraordinarily profitable, a new investigation by The Guardian revealed. Here’s columnist Faimon Roberts’ take. An investigation by The Guardian has revealed that five justices of the peace in Louisiana earned more than $220,000 in salary each year from 2023-2025 from their work. One of these justices, Chuck Cusimano II, earned more over $400,000, a higher yearly salary than Chief Justice John Roberts of the US Supreme Court. The high-earners are particularly interested in evictions, as state law allows JOPs to charge a filing fee to plaintiffs, usually landlords, when they rule in favor of them, which incentivizes more evictions. This conflicts of interest could lead to a conflict of interest within the court. The report suggests that the majority of these JOP members are not abusing the system, but the ones abusing it give the rest a bad name. There should be greater oversight and a low-cost appeal option for those who believe they've been wronged in these courts.
