For the first time in Louisiana, 15-year-old Phillip Mullin has been functionally cured of sickle cell disease through a gene therapy. He is also the first person to use Lyfgenia, the stem cell treatment that made it possible. Mullin, from Alexandria, has had over 100 hospital stays and his disease causes abnormal red blood cells, which can lead to pain, infection and stroke. His mother, Shataka Figgins, described the moment as emotional and hopeful. Following his treatment, Mullin plans to return to school to study and become a hematologist/oncologist.
