State Legislation to address the youth mental health

Lawmakers are taking the mental health crisis involving young people by storm. Louisiana State Senator Regina Barrow is leading the state legislature with at least three bills addressing the youth mental health crisis. One bill proposes mental health days as excused absences for Louisiana students, allowing high school and college students to take at least two such days per semester and have the chance to make these days up before the semester ends. Other bills include SB349 which mandates mental health evaluations for high school student-athletes injured during a sporting event, SB 310 which requires every public and approved nonpublic secondary school to print 988 on the back of all school IDs, the suicide and crisis hotline number for those struggling with mental health. Barrow hopes these measures could eliminate as many barriers as possible.

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Lawmakers are taking the mental health crisis involving young people by storm.

Senator Regina Barrow is addressing it with at least three bills this week. One of the bills proposes mental health days as excused absences for Louisiana students.

“It’s really important that we offer that, and I want our young people to know that it is okay when you are not okay so that you are not okay and get the help that you need,” said Regina Barrow, Louisiana State Senator.

Suicide is one of the most common causes of death for teens and young people between the ages of 10 and 34. Barrow is hoping that new legislation could change that.

Louisiana high school and college students would be allowed to take at least two mental health days per semester and have the chance to make those days up before the semester ends.

“I want to eliminate as many barriers as possible, and so in the interim, I am going to do a resolution where we can study to make sure that we are beefing up that system and ensuring that whatever gaps we have we are eliminating them,” said Barrow.

Other bills focusing on student mental health are SB349 which mandates mental health evaluations of high school student-athletes who are injured while participating in a sporting event. SB 310 requires every public and approved nonpublic secondary school to print 988 on the back of all school ids.

988 is the suicide and crisis hotline number for people who are struggling with their mental health.
