BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry signed a bill Tuesday fundamentally changing the way the Louisiana Economic Development system works.

Secretary of LED Susan Bourgeois said Senate Bill 494, also called the “Positioning Louisiana to Win” bill, could improve the state’s economy. The new law eliminates the statutory requirement that the governor appoint an assistant secretary and undersecretary.

Officials said it also establishes a private sector-led board called the Louisiana Economic Development Partnership to develop an economic strategic plan.

“It gives us an oversight board that is made up of private sector individuals who are the job creators in the state who understand the economy and the opportunity before us. And allows us to respond at the speed of business instead of the speed of government,” Bourgeois said.

Bourgeois said the bill will help create more opportunities for families, business owners and potential business owners in Louisiana.

“Louisiana is the only southern state that is losing population, and we do not have the luxury of waiting. We couldn’t go slow with this,” Bourgeois said.

Landry said before the year is over “some great opportunities” will be announced.

“Today we are taking the first big step toward restoring Louisiana’s position as the economic powerhouse of the South,” Landry said. “We have always had the most skilled and dedicated workers, the richest natural resources, and the best location for national and international commerce in the country. Now, with the signing of this bill and the leadership of Secretary Bourgeois, we can finally take full advantage of all the things that make Louisiana so special and give our workers and their families the future they deserve.”
