Livingston Parish sheriff's deputies found a dead black bear about 8:30 a.m. Sunday along the side of the Interstate 12 westbound exit ramp near Holden.

While Louisiana black bear's primary range is along the Atchafalaya and Tensas river basins in the south-central and northeastern parts of the state, the furry, flat-footed omnivores are known to wander far afield, especially in the summer when it's time to breed, according to state wildlife officials.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries confirmed on Monday the adult male bear found off of I-12 was hit by a vehicle. The bear weighed 250 pounds.

The bears, which were removed from threatened status in 2016, like dense forest cover with diverse food sources and have favored the hardwood bottomland forests of the Mississippi River valley, wildlife and fisheries officials said.
