Guest Column: Bill Cassidy should block FDA’s evasive nominee
Dr. Heidi Overton, who is President Donald Trump’s nominee to head the Food and Drug Administration, has a very worrisome record on vaccination policy. Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy should try to vote down her nomination. On Sept. 24, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee held its first hearing on Dr. Heidi Overton, President Donald Trump's nominee to lead the Food and Drug Administration. The committee chairman, Bill Cassidy, questioned Overton's record, her views and how she would run the agency. Overton recently stood alongside the president in the Oval Office as he announced an executive order aimed at changing childhood vaccine recommendations, including a call to give the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine as three separate shots, a move that undermines trust in a vaccine that works. This comes as measles outbreaks across the country are the worst in over three decades. Cassidy, himself a physician, has publicly stated that Overton’s role in the vaccine order calls into question her commitment to sound science and to protecting children’ health.
