National Hurricane Center forecasters spotted the Gulf of Mexico's first tropical disturbance of the year, just over a week after the start of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.
The system, which is located in the eastern Gulf, is expected to bring showers and thunderstorms to Florida within the next day as it moves northeastward, before shifting to the southeast coast later this week. Forecasters say that some slow development is possible once the system is offshore of the southeast coast.
However, the chance of the system forming into a tropical depression or stronger storm within the next week is low. There is a zero percent chance of formation within the next 48 hours, and a 20 percent chance within the next week.
