At LSU, South Korean ambassador says Hyundai plant makes Louisiana a ‘key diplomatic state’

“The fact that as I, as the Korean ambassador to the United States, have made two visits in less than two months is a good indication of the increasing importance of Louisiana in our bilateral relationship between the United States and the Republic of Korea,” Kyung-wha said. South Korean Ambassador to the United States, Kang Kyung-wha, stated that Louisiana is becoming a “key diplomatic state” as South Korean companies seek to invest in the U.S. This comes after the groundbreaking ceremony for the $5.8 billion Hyundai-POSCO steel mill in Ascension Parish, which Kyungwha attended. She emphasized the need for the federal government to foster openness and policy stability for foreign companies to expand their operations. In June, LSU announced an agreement with the Hyundai Steel mill for sponsored research and jointly developed technology for a yet-to-be-determined sum, which could generate up to $100 million in research over the next 10 years. The steel mill is expected to begin commercial production in 2029 and create 1,300 permanent jobs.
