Louisiana's redfish limits changing for first time in decades. Here are the new rules.
Louisiana seeks to address a worrying decline in numbers for what is officially known as the red drum. Louisiana will introduce its first change to recreational catch limits on redfish since the 1980s, effective in a few weeks. The move is part of a larger effort to address a decline in numbers in the species, following a comprehensive assessment in December 2022 which found that while redfish are not yet being overfished, they are in the process of getting there. The number of one-year-old redfish inshore has dropped to the lowest level ever seen by biologists.

Louisiana's first change to recreational catch limits on redfish since the 1980s will take effect in a couple weeks, Wildlife and Fisheries officials announced Friday, as the state seeks to address a sharp decline in numbers in the highly sought after species.
The change marks the end of a long process of debate stretching back a couple years. A comprehensive assessment released in December 2022 found that while redfish were not yet being overfished, they are in the process of getting there. It found that the number of one-year-old redfish inshore had dropped to the lowest level ever seen by the state’s biologists.
