COVINGTON, La. — LSU basketball alum Josh Maravich, whose father, Pete Maravich, is enshrined in the Hall of Fame, has passed away at the age of 42, the university confirmed on Saturday evening.

Josh Maravich’s death occurred at his residence on Friday, according to the LSU statement. The cause of his death has yet to be disclosed.

During his tenure from the 2001-02 to 2004-05 seasons, Josh Maravich played as a reserve for LSU, whose home court is the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, under the guidance of former coach John Brady.

Achieving his dream of playing for LSU where his father set a historic men’s NCAA Division I scoring record, Josh Maravich embraced his role as a walk-on, expressing his intent to honor his father’s legacy in a 2005 interview with The Daily Reveille, LSU’s student newspaper. “I wanted to come here for my dad to make him proud,” he remarked, knowing that his contribution to the team would be different from his father’s stardom.

Pete Maravich, renowned for his scoring prowess, had an NBA career that prematurely ended in 1980 due to knee injury complications. In 1988, at just 40 years old, Pete Maravich died from an undiagnosed heart condition.

His enduring NCAA scoring record was recently overtaken by Iowa basketball star Caitlin Clark, bringing his name back into discussions.

In 2022, when LSU inaugurated a bronze statue of Pete Maravich outside its basketball facility, the credit for the concept of representing Pete making a behind-the-back pass was given to his sons, Josh Maravich and his older brother Jaeson Maravich, reaffirming their father’s legacy of showmanship and creativity in the sport.
