Why 150K inactive Louisiana voter registrations could be canceled — and why the number grew
“We often hear people saying that they choose to sit out the vote,” said M. Christian Green, president of the League of Women Voters of Louisiana. “But that choice has a consequence, and they could find out that, when they do want to exercise their right to vote, they don’t have that opportunity because they’re no longer on the rolls.” Louisiana could cancel roughly 150,000 inactive voter registrations if those residents don't cast ballots in the November election. This is a significant increase from the previous years due to tightened procedures for keeping the state's voter rolls up to date, leading to more registrations being designated inactive. State leaders argue that the new system ensures only qualified voters cast a ballot and that accurate voter rolls are essential for fair elections. However, voting rights advocates worry that these changes could disenfranchise people. In 2025, Louisiana added an additional review: Registered voters who have not voted or updated their registration in the last 10 years can now automatically be designated as inactive. Data from the Secretary of State shows that the number of inactive registrations has increased under the expanded voter roll canvass.
