Louisiana utilities are now being required to explore nuclear energy. How will they pay for it?
The requirement comes with demand for electricity skyrocketing as a result of data centers and industrial development. Louisiana's investor-owned power utilities, Entergy, Cleco Power and Southwestern Electric Power Company, will be required to participate in research to advance nuclear energy in the state. The state's Public Service Commission approved rules for its “Louisiana Advanced Nuclear Exploration” program, which aims to encourage investment in nuclear energy. The program will partner with nuclear energy firms to conduct feasibility studies, economic analyses, and other studies on integrating nuclear energy into their systems. While these utilities are required to contribute, electric cooperatives can opt in. The utilities can spend up to $2 million over the entire program. If utilities want to increase their rates, they will need to apply for a rate increase.
