When we last left Alex Milazzo, Kenson Tate and Sean Burrell, they were in the throes of postseason competition. Milazzo and the Tigers fought valiantly but lost in the championship game of the NCAA Division I baseball North Carolina regional. Though not the ultimate goal, Milazzo was still honored by being selected as the catcher on the All-Tournament team. Sophomore Tate, competing in the long jump at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, made his second NCAA championship appearance. Competing on the evening of June 5 in the long jump finals, Tate finished 12th overall with a leap of 24 feet 9.75 inches, earning his third second-team All American honor.
Later the same day and also at the NCAA Track and Field Championships, fellow former Bronco Burrell, also known as “Squirrel," competed in the semifinals of the 400-meter hurdles. Advancing to the June 7 finals required a first- or second-place finish in one of three heats or a top time. Burrell finished second in his heat with a time of 49.03, which was the fifth highest time overall. An hour later, Burrell took the lead leg on an LSU 4x400-meter relay team, which finished second in its heat (3:02.95) and qualified for the finals, also on June 7. Friday could not come fast enough with the anticipation of watching one of my favorite athletes to come through Zachary compete for his third individual national championship with the potential for a fourth in the 4x400-meter relay.
The two-hour time difference between the West Coast and Central Standard Time did not help, as those of you who read last week’s article can attest. Yes, I flubbed it and went forward instead of backward. Burrell was not able to win a third NCAA championship (winning in 2021 and 2022) in his last year at 9:30 Central time and the 4x400-meter relay team finished seventh later in the evening, ending Burrell’s LSU career. The 2024 All District 4-5A baseball team was recently announced, and ZHS Broncos were prominently represented. First-team selections included utility players and seniors Talan Wallace and Sawyer Seguin, junior outfielder Skyler Andrews and junior infielder Jake Lipscomb. Second-teamers included juniors Jack Prejean (pitcher), John Bradley (catcher) and Fischer Romero (outfield), and sophomores Collin Walls (infield) and Madden McClure (infield).
Boston Scott has moved from the East Coast to the West Coast. The six-year NFL veteran is no longer a Philadelphia Eagle but is now basking in the California sun as a Los Angeles Ram running back. During OTA practices, Scott appeared to have an opportunity to pick up double duty as both a punt and kick returner for the Rams. Keep an eye out for Scott and former Bronco Douglas Coleman III, who is on the Chicago Bears training camp roster as a defensive back. The UFL spring pro football experience featured former ZHS superstar Lindsey Scott with the Arlington Renegades. During the spring 2024 campaign, Scott completed 6 of 7 passes for 21 yards and a touchdown. Scott saw a lot of time with the ball under his arm as opposed to leaving his arm rushing for 72 yards on 20 attempts. The Renegades finished the season 3-7.
