Rookie forward Angel Reese has her WNBA career off to a fantastic start, quickly blossoming into one of her team’s top players. That production comes as no surprise to her given recent comments made about her transition from the college ranks.

Reese credited her former head coach Kim Mulkey with preparing her for this professional opportunity by instilling a hard-working mindset into her LSU program. It’s paid immediate dividends!

She sat down with CBS Sports on Wednesday to talk about Year 1 in the “W,” where she’s currently averaging a near-double-double at 11.6 points and 9.6 boards per night.

“I think my transition has been great,” she said. “It hasn’t been a super, big, huge surprise because Kim Mulkey kind of prepared me for this moment. At LSU, our practices were like four hours. We were ready, we were working, I though training camp was going to be harder, so, I think I was really prepared. I haven’t had any WNBA surprises, yet.”

With the Tigers, Reese was a superstar and a double-double machine. In LSU’s 2023 national title run, she averaged 21 points and 15 rebounds on the daily.

It was much of the same the year after, though she wasn’t able to go back-to-back thanks to a revenge performance by nemesis Caitlin Clark in the Elite Eight.

Her on-court success has continued as a pro, and though she says the transition was an easy one, Angel Reese admitted to some early hiccups as a rookie.

“My first game was against Minnesota, and I guarded Napheesa [Collier],” she remembered of her ‘Welcome to the WNBA’ moment. “I was getting cooked the first game, I’m not gonna lie.”

Collier, a sixth-year veteran, racked up 17 points in 19 minutes on 78% shooting that preseason meeting. In the regular season, she’s scoring just shy of 21 points a night this year, so that shouldn’t come as a surprise!

Rather than get down, Reese took the performance as a learning experience.

Angel Reese wants to continue growing the game and impacting young ones in the process.

She’s done a great job of bringing attention to both women’s college basketball and the WNBA thus far, staying true to who she is even amid outside criticism.

Those eyes will certainly be watching this weekend with the Chicago Sky gearing up to take on the Indiana Fever.

Caitlin Clark got the better of Reese in their first matchup as pros, giving her a current two-game win streak in the individual rivalry. We’ll see if Reese can get payback on Sunday.
