Speed limit lowered on Nicholson Drive after deadly crash kills LSU student, fiancé

DOTD is lowering the speed limit on Nicholson Drive in Baton Rouge from 45 to 35 mph after a crash killed an LSU student and her fiancé. The speed limit on Nicholson Drive in Baton Rouge is being reduced from 45 mph to 35 mph following a fatal crash that killed an LSU student and her fiancé, 21-year-old Leah Victoria Fonte, and 21-yr-old Shane David Hirstius, who were walking along the shoulder of the road when a vehicle driven by 20-year old Mia Camille Dawson veered off the roadway and struck them. Fonte died at the scene and Hirstii later died at a hospital. Dawson was arrested on charges including vehicular homicide and hit-and-run driving. The deaths have sparked calls for safety improvements along the road, particularly in areas with limited pedestrian infrastructure. A major road improvement project is already underway along Nicholson Drive, with plans for a shared-use path, additional lighting and improved pedestrian crossings.
