BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - An event that aims to break down barriers in healthcare is being hosted by the Southern University Law Center and the Southern University Increasing Clinicians of Diversity Initiative.

The event is called DiverseMed: Breaking Barriers in Healthcare and is scheduled to take place on Friday, June 14, at the Southern University Law Center Building.

According to organizers, there will be discussions all day that will cover topics impacting the minority community. That includes maternal mortality, the stigma attached to seeking medical care, and more.

“Through this event, we want our minority community members to engage with clinicians of diversity and hear them passionately discussing and actively working to confront health disparities,” said Marla Dickerson, vice chancellor for innovation and strategic partnerships and Initiatives for Southern University Law Center. “As they see clinicians that look like them advocating for their health, it will foster trust and build hope for a healthier future.”

Speakers will include Dr. Uché Blackstock, author and founder of Advancing Health Equity; Dr. Pierre, Johnson, board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist; Dr. Rani Whitfield, board-certified family physician; Kiara Carnes, board-certified lactation consultant and co-owner of Maternal Love, and more.

The event is free and open to the public. Those interested in attending are asked to register ahead of time. Click here to register and for more information.
