Baton Rouge cancer center first in US to use AI technology to help patients

Dr. Stathakis said the cancer center is the first in the United States to try this software to help schedule patients. He said he discovered the technology at a recent tradeshow. The Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, has become the first in the US to use AI technology to schedule patients. The software, Gray O-S, aims to find which days in the week and times a particular patient can be scheduled, reducing missed appointments and time with patients. Dr. Sotirios Stathakis, chief of physics at the cancer center, discovered the technology at a tradeshow and expects scheduling efficiency to improve by at least 40 to 50%. The operating system is expected to help staff and patients.

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center is the first in the nation to use new AI technology.

“Patient scheduling is a very difficult task,” said Dr. Sotirios Stathakis, chief of physics at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center.

Dr. Stathakis said the cancer center is the first in the United States to try this software to help schedule patients. He said he discovered the technology at a recent tradeshow.

“The software will learn from our past and try to find which days in the week and times in the week a particular patient can be scheduled. So, that we can minimize missed appointments and maximize our time with the patients,” said Dr. Stathakis.

The operating system is called Gray O-S, and it was created by Gray Oncology Solutions.

“We hope that our scheduling efficiency will improve by at least 40 to 50%,” said Dr. Stathakis.

The operating system is expected to help staff and patients.

“It will be more efficient for you. You will just come for your appointment, you will not have to wait for someone else that is delayed,” said Dr. Stathakis.

Dr. Stathakis said this is another way Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center is proving its commitment to patients.

“It’s done so we can spend more time with patients, not to take away the job of a scheduler or a nurse,” said Dr. Stathakis.

The cancer center will use the technology in about six to eight weeks.

“We are super excited, not only to have such a technology, but to also be the first in the U.S. to use this technology,” said Dr. Stathakis.
